If you’re a breastfeeding mother who needs to express milk on the go or at work, having a high-quality and effective breast pump is essential. Two of the most popular and talked about breast pumps on the market are the Spectra and the Medela Pump In Style. They are also the most offered breast pumps that are covered for free with qualifying health insurance. Both pumps are known for their efficiency, durability, and user-friendly features, but there are also some key differences between the two. In this blog post, we’ll take a closer look at the Medela vs Spectra to help you determine which one is the best fit for your needs. For a fair comparison, we will be comparing the Medela Pump in Style to the Spectra S2 as they are both powered by plugging into an electrical outlet (not wireless).

Medela vs Spectra In-Depth Feature Comparison
Motor System Design
Both the Medela Medela Pump In Style and Spectra S2 have the closed system design. A closed system in a breast pump refers to a design that prevents breast milk from entering the pump’s tubing or motor. In a closed system breast pump, the breast milk flows directly from the breast shield into the collection container, without passing through any tubing or other parts of the pump.
Having a closed system is important for maintaining hygiene and preventing contamination of breast milk. If breast milk enters the tubing or motor of a breast pump, it can be difficult to clean and may lead to the growth of bacteria or other microorganisms. This can potentially cause health problems for both the mother and the baby.
In addition to reducing the risk of contamination, a closed system breast pump can also be more efficient and comfortable to use. Because the breast milk flows directly into the collection container, there is less suction loss and the pump can more effectively express milk from the breast.
Winner: Both!

Display
Medela Pump In Style
The Medela pump has a very sleek and simple design with no digital display.
Spectra S2
The Spectra S2 breast pump has a digital display that shows various information during operation. The display typically shows the suction level, pumping time, and mode (let-down or expression). Additionally, the Spectra S2 display features a night light that can be turned on or off, making it easier to use the pump during nighttime pumping sessions without disrupting others.
The display on the Spectra S2 is user-friendly and easy to read, even in low light conditions. The pump also features a memory function that remembers the user’s preferred settings for the next pumping session, making it easier to start pumping quickly and efficiently.
Winner: Spectra S2. I liked having a display while pumping so I can monitor the duration of my session. For the Medela, I had to set a separate timer to ensure I pump for at least 15 minutes.
Pump Settings
Medela Pump In Style
The Medela offers adjustable vacuum strength and cycle speed controls, allowing users to find the level of suction and cycling pattern that is most comfortable and effective for them. The pump also offers various suction modes, including a “massage” mode that uses a gentle suction to help stimulate milk flow and a “maximum comfort” vacuum setting that is designed to provide a more comfortable pumping experience.
Spectra S2
The Spectra S2 breast pump allows users to customize the cycle speed and vacuum strength to create a personalized pumping experience that is tailored to their needs and preferences. This is achieved through the pump’s adjustable suction settings and cycling patterns.
The Spectra S2 offers a wide range of vacuum strength options from 0 to 320 mmHg, to help mimic a gentle natural sucking pattern of a nursing baby or a stronger suction that can help to express milk more efficiently. This allows users to choose the level of suction that is most comfortable and effective for their individual needs.
In addition to vacuum strength, the Spectra S2 also allows users to adjust the cycle speed of the pump with a range of 38 to 54 cycles per minute. This refers to the rate at which the suction fluctuates between high and low pressure. By adjusting the cycle speed, users can mimic the natural rhythm of their baby’s sucking pattern, which can help to stimulate milk flow and increase efficiency.
The Spectra S2 also features a “massage mode” that uses a gentle, low-frequency suction pattern to mimic the initial let-down stage of breastfeeding. This mode can help to trigger the release of milk and make pumping more comfortable for some users.
Winner: Spectra S2. Overall, the ability to customize the cycle speed and vacuum strength of the Spectra S2 allows users to create a personalized pumping experience especially if pumping hasn’t been easy for a new mom. The combination of the digital display and customization of settings may assist in more comfortable and efficient pumping sessions.
Ease of Use
Medela Pump In Style
The Medela Pump in Style is designed to be easy to use, even for first-time users. The pump comes with clear instructions and a user-friendly interface that allows for easy operation.
To use the Pump In Style, the user simply needs to connect the breast shields and tubing to the pump motor, and then attach the breast shields to their breasts. The user can then turn on the pump and use the vacuum and cycling controls to adjust the suction and cycling pattern to their liking. The pump also comes with a battery pack option, making it easy to use on the go.
Spectra S2
The Spectra S2 breast pump is also designed to be user-friendly featuring a simple and intuitive interface.
To use the Spectra S2, the user simply needs to attach the breast shields and tubing to the pump motor, and then attach the breast shields to their breasts. The user can then turn on the pump and adjust the vacuum strength and cycle speed to their liking using the easy-to-use controls. The pump also offers a massage mode that can help stimulate milk flow and increase milk output.
Winner: Medela Pump In Style. As previously mentioned, the customizable suction and cycle settings Spectra offers can be great for a personalized experience but can also be confusing for first-time users. You can find recommended custom settings for the Spectra online to help increase pump output but I remember not knowing what settings to begin with when I first pumped using the Spectra.
Ease of Cleaning
Medela Pump In Style
Cleaning the Medela breast pump is relatively easy and straightforward. The pump comes with detachable parts that can be easily cleaned and sterilized after each use.
To clean the Pump In Style, you would just disassemble the breast shields, tubing, and any other parts that come into contact with breast milk. These parts can be washed in warm, soapy water and then rinsed thoroughly with clean water. Make sure to sanitize the parts using a steam bag or by boiling them in water for 10-15 minutes. Medela also offers specialized cleaning wipes that can be used to quickly and easily clean the pump parts.
Spectra S2
Cleaning the Spectra is also easy and straightforward, following a similar procedure as cleaning the Medela. The only difference is that the Spectra breast flanges are slightly bigger and more oddly shaped compared to the Medela breast flanges. The shape and size of the flanges made it harder to store the parts in a bottle sterilizer machine (if you are using one). There are also 5 parts to wash for the Spectra (bottle, duckbill valve, flange, backflow protectors and membranes) vs only 4 parts for the Medela (bottle, breast shields, Flex Connectors and members). Cleaning and sanitizing every pump part thoroughly is super important for your baby’s health because it helps to ensure that the breast milk is free from bacteria and other contaminants that could potentially harm your baby.
Winner: Medela Pump In Style. I personally found the Medela easier to clean as there are less separate parts to wash and the parts are less bulky to fit into my Baby Brezza Bottle Sterilizer.
Ease of Buying Spare Parts
Medela Pump In Style
Buying spare parts for the Medela Pump In Style is relatively easy, as Medela is a well-established and popular brand with a wide range of products and accessories available online and in retail stores.
Medela offers a range of replacement parts for the Pump in Style, including breast shields, tubing, valves, and connectors, which can be purchased directly from the company’s website, Amazon, and conveniently at Target.
Spectra S2
Like the Medela, buying spare parts for the Spectra breast pumps is generally also easy, as Spectra is a popular brand with a wide range of products and accessories available both online and in retail stores.
Spectra offers a range of replacement parts for their breast pumps, including breast flanges, tubing, valves, and protectors, which can be purchased directly from the company’s website, Amazon and Target.
If you are on a budget, Amazon also conveniently offers compatible parts for Spectra breast pumps at a fraction of the price.
Winner: Spectra S2. Having spare parts can be helpful if you don’t want to clean and sterilize your parts constantly throughout the day. The Medela parts are good quality but can be costly. With the option of purchasing Spectra compatible pump parts, this offers more flexibility for new moms on a budget.
Final Thoughts On My Personal Breast Pump Winner: Medela vs Spectra
When I was exclusive pumping for my son who had latching issues, I was lucky enough to have both the Medela Pump In Style and Spectra S1 (same as S2 but wireless) to test out to maximize my pumping sessions. I used the Medela Pump In Style first and it gave me a decent output of around 5 oz per session but I heard great things about the Spectra for a lot of moms and I was curious if I would pump more milk in a session with the Spectra. I had a friend who was gracious enough to let me try her Spectra. To my surprise, the Spectra produced about the same output as the Medela. Personally, since both pumps had similar output, I did prefer the Medela due to the more compact pump parts for ease of cleaning and storage. However, for moms who have more trouble pumping, the Spectra would provide more flexibility to maximize milk output with its customizable vacuum strength and cycle speed settings.
If I had to pick one winner, I would recommend the Spectra S1 (or S2) for new moms as it is more affordable and has a higher success rate in pump output with its customizable pump settings.
It’s important to note that both the Medela and Spectra breast pumps are well-respected and popular among breastfeeding mothers, and the decision of which one is “better” ultimately depends on individual preferences and needs. It may be helpful to read reviews, talk to other mothers, and consult with a lactation consultant or healthcare provider to determine which breast pump is the best fit for you.
Good luck mamas!
